10 Months…

Just put together our congratulations video for over 500 Allies that are completing their Apprenticeship. For those who are curious about what happens during a term, these 45 seconds do a pretty good job of capturing it.  Congrats again to our Class of 2012, our newest batch of Alumni!

Ally 2010 Stories: PA Silicon Valley

PA Silicon Valley & San Francisco 2010-2011 Allies and Staff

Public Allies Silicon Valley has updated their Facebook Fan page with short Ally stories.  Here’s the latest installment featuring Elizabeth Aigbekaen, who is serving at the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula.

Working with the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula as a College Bound Coordinator, has been such a great learning experience for me. I love the teens that we have, and I enjoy watching them learn and grow. This week we have two exciting events for them to attend that I have been in charge of coordinating for them. Snapshot | Dainty … or determined?

This snapshot of Nikki, an Ally in San Francisco, was taken by Christophe Gonzales during a service day project. The “caption” below was written by Lauren LePage, a San Francisco Ally.

In her mid-year presentation of learning, Nikki performed spoken word, sharing with us a poem she’d written about feeling pressed on all sides. And when the pressure built up, she stopped trying; to be mediocre was easier.

But she wanted to press back.

As her fellow Ally, I’ve watched Nikki press back, press back, and press on through. She is nothing short of fierce. In this photo, Nikki’s wearing a mask and gloves not because she’s dainty or nervous about paint smudges; she’s protecting herself from paint fumes. Because even though she was pregnant, she was determined to take part in our Cesar Chavez Service Day, determined to help create the mural at Anne Darling Elementary School, just as she was determined to fully commit to her placement, her Team Service Project (of which I’m proud to be a part), and her Critical Reflection project.

She pressed, she pressed, she pressed on back. And that’s not all she pressed on through…

Meet baby Kaya Seletute Arenal, born May 21, 2010, at 3:09 a.m. We like to refer to her as the Team HIP baby.

Catching Up with Sheila Bernus Dowd, Silicon Valley Staff ’96-’03

Sheila Bernus-Dowd

Sheila Bernus-Dowd was a Program Manager in 1996, and then later became Executive Director of Public Allies Silicon Valley.  We recently caught up with her via Facebook chat.

MacArthur:  When /where were you with Public Allies  and how did you serve there?
Sheila:  Well it was from 1996 to 2004? I was Program Manager/Training Director and then Executive Director.
MacArthur:  at Public Allies Silicon Valley, right?
Sheila:  maybe it was ’03? Yes, Silicon Valley!
MacArthur:  When you close your eyes and think about that time, what image or images flash in your mind’s eye?
Sheila:  I remember core training – all hands in during closing circles. Leaping off platforms with allies by my side. I remember each year the platform seeming slightly easier. I remember the pride I had when allies graduated.   I also remember staff retreats being as intense at ally retreats and nationally loving the folks I worked with fiercely.
