FAQ: Deadlines…Can I apply after my preferred site deadline passes?

Every Monday afternoon, we try to respond to Frequently Asked Questions from applicants.  Yeah, we’ve been away for a couple weeks, but now we’re back to bring the thunder.  This week, let’s break down the deadline thang.

The Public Allies Ally Application season is heading down the homestretch.  Here’s a quick summary:

  • Feb 17, 2010.  Eagle Rock.
  • April 23, 2010.  Delaware.
  • April 30, 2010.  Connecticut, Milwaukee.
  • May 15, 2010.  New York.
  • May 17, 2010.  Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Chicago.
  • May 26, 2010.  North Carolina.
  • May 28, 2010.  Arizona.
  • May 31, 2010.  Cincinnati, San Antonio.
  • June 1, 2010.  Pittsburgh.
  • June 7, 2010.  Indianapolis.
  • June 15, 2010.  Maryland, Miami, Los Angeles.
  • July 1, 2010.  New Sites.
  • July 30, 2010.  New Mexico.

Here are some quick FAQs, around deadlines:

Can I apply to a site (or sites) after the deadline?

Sure!  However, the common practice will be that your application will be considered after all of those received prior to deadline have been reviewed.  Check with local sites to see their specific policy.  Here are a few more deadline-related Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I change my “Primary” site even after I submitted it?

Yes, you can.  Just go back into your application and re-save it with the new sites you’d like to select.

What happens if I apply to multiple sites, and my “Primary” site doesn’t want to pursue my application?

Then your application is up for consideration by the other sites (a.k.a. the “Secondary Sites.”)  However, you will be considered like a “free agent” (in sports terms) — which means you could advance in multiple selection processes.  It’s up to you to determine whether or not you want to interview with multiple sites.

Thanks again for your interest!  If you have any further questions, please feel free to let us know.

Everything on this site in reference to application status, it’s dates are from 2010 ? I signed up in and for 2011, is there a specific way you all date your Allies intake?

      Hey Freeya!

Thanks for checking the site out. We’re in the process of updating for the new recruitment cycle — and most of it will be cosmetic, since alot of the content is relevant no matter what the year.

In terms of your question, I’ve got you in our current application cycle for 2011 (per my records, you applied 1/24). DC will begin looking at their applicants next Monday, so you should expect to hear from them soon. Hope that helps — if you have any other q’s, don’t hesitate to hit me up.

I wanted to apply to the new york site but when I fill out the application it doesn’t allow me to pick new york because the deadline has passed I wanted to know when will applications be opened again and can I apply now?

    thank you

      Hi Sharday,

The deadline for PA NY has passed. I’d expect applications to re-open at the end of the calendar year (for Fall 2012). You may want to reach out to Marissa at PA NY, as they may be accepting for Fall 2011 this summer, as sometimes Finalists withdraw from the process and they’ll look for new candidates — but that’s rare, and varies from site to site. Thanks for your question!
